Protecting biodiversity through knowledge, partnerships and local action
TotalEnergies’ global Biodiversity Strategy (Biodiversity | TotalEnergies.com) is structured around four key commitments: respecting exclusion zones and special protected areas; sustainably managing biodiversity during all operational phases; developing and implementing Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs); and promoting research, awareness, education and partnerships to strengthen conservation.
In Suriname, TotalEnergies EP Suriname B.V. applies these principles through actions adapted to the local environmental context and implemented under its Biodiversity Action Plan.
The affiliate’s approach focuses on improving ecosystem knowledge, supporting biodiversity related initiatives, and building capacity and awareness through collaboration with specialized partners active in the country.
All biodiversity initiatives are designed in line with operational realities and national priorities, and are implemented in coordination with scientific, institutional and civil society stakeholders.
Our biodiversity approach in Suriname
Since starting operations in Suriname in 2020, TotalEnergies EP Suriname B.V. has integrated environmental stewardship into its Environmental Management System (EMS). The Biodiversity Action Plan provides a structured framework for long‑term actions that support biodiversity and ecosystem services, implemented in collaboration with government institutions, academia, non‑governmental organizations and local communities.
This approach is based on:
- Scientific rigor, relying on studies, mapping and field data to inform decisions;
- Partnerships, working with specialized organizations with recognized expertise;
- Local relevance, ensuring actions are adapted to Suriname’s ecosystems and context;
- Long‑term perspective, combining conservation, education and capacity building.
These initiatives translate the Company’s biodiversity principles into concrete, locally relevant actions.
Biodiversity Action Plan – Projects overview
It is implemented through a project’s portfolio addressing different dimensions of biodiversity, including ecosystem knowledge, species protection, community engagement and environmental education. These initiatives span multiple ecosystems and themes, such as wildlife protection, forest management, coastal rehabilitation, environmental mapping and climate literacy, and are developed in partnership with specialized organizations.
Wildlife Research & Monitoring
Partner: NeoWild
This focuses on wildlife research and monitoring in pristine forest ecosystems, through field data collection and analysis. It supports a better understanding of species presence and behavior, through scientific publication and public awareness materials, while informing conservation efforts and management decisions.
Sustainable Agroforestry Capacity Building
Partner: Tropenbos Suriname
This initiative supports the integration of traditional agricultural practices with sustainable agroforestry techniques through research, capacity building, and knowledge sharing. It aims to strengthen local communities by optimizing land use, contributing to improved forest management and biodiversity conservation.
Community-Led Mangrove Nursery and Rehabilitation
Partner: Ambrosius Bees
This project focuses on rehabilitating coastal mangrove ecosystems along the Weg Naar Zee area, through the establishment of a mangrove nursery and targeted rehabilitation efforts. It aims to protect the coastal ecosystems that are essential for biodiversity conservation, shoreline stabilization, and the safeguarding of local livelihoods, while contributing to climate resilience.
Climate Literacy
Partner: Green Heritage Fund Suriname
This initiative strengthens climate literacy among youth in Suriname through education and awareness, improving understanding of the link between climate and human activity and supporting informed decision-making. Through school programs, youth engagement sessions and micro-grants for youth-led sustainable initiatives, it supports the development of learning tools and activities on climate-related topics across different audiences.
Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapping
Partner: Green Heritage Fund Suriname
This project supports the update and enhancement of environmental data on coastal and marine resources through the development of Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapping along Suriname’s coastline. By combining field data collection, stakeholder engagement, and spatial analysis, it contributes to improved environmental management, disaster response preparedness, and evidence-based decision-making for coastal and marine ecosystems.
Capacity Building in Tree Identification
Partner: Foundation for Forest Management & Production Control - SBB
This initiative strengthens biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management in Suriname by building national expertise in tree identification. The project provides specialized training to develop Tree Identification Specialists from Indigenous & Tribal People (ITPs), Forest Rangers, Private Sector Loggers, and other environmental professionals, supporting sustainable forest management.
All biodiversity initiatives conducted by TotalEnergies EP Suriname B.V. are implemented in partnership with specialized organizations and in line with national regulations. They contribute to improved knowledge, protection and awareness of biodiversity.
